Chapter 10

Kamaria

Mardi Gras Day

This had been my best Mardi Gras break yet and I was grateful to be experiencing it before my college days ended. The break starting off with that God awful dinner could have ruined everything, but thankfully it hadn’t. It was a minor bump in the road and I made sure I stayed on the go to limit interactions with my mom. Not that I had to try as hard due to her busy work schedule. She’d been working night shifts, so whenever I was out and about in the house she’d be resting. Everything was working out perfectly because I couldn’t handle dealing with her for the duration of this break. My parents and I had agreed a while ago that it would be best if I returned home after I graduated college at least until I found a stable job. But I knew for a fact I couldn’t do that. I was going to make it my business to have a job lined up and waiting on me by the time I graduated, and if I couldn’t find an affordable apartment I’d ask my aunt if I could stay with her. Anything not to have to return to this damn house.

After the dinner I was even more in my head about Cambrie’s birthday party, but surprisingly, everything went well. Cambrie had good energy, making me believe her apology was really genuine. Kyree’s twin sisters fully embraced me and we chatted all through the night. By the end of the party we were exchanging numbers. The rest of his family welcomed me with open arms too and I honestly didn’t see that coming. I thought because Hailey had been around for so long that they’d be standoffish with me how Cambrie originally was, but that wasn’t the case and I was relieved. I was ready for anything but I ultimately wanted to hit it off with his family. Hailey was there of course and I didn’t miss how she sat at a table the entire time looking salty. I noticed Cambrie going by her several times to cheer her up with attempts to make her get up and dance, but apparently she wasn’t having it. She disappeared about an hour and a half into the party, making me wonder about the fate of her and Cambrie’s friendship. I didn’t dawn on it too long though because I wasn’t that invested and their friendship could crumble to pieces for all I cared. It really wasn’t my problem, and I could only hope that my presence at Cambrie’s party stopped Hailey from clinging on to Kyree’s family so damn much. It reeked of desperation.

Sunday I had an even better time with Kyree’s family. He had a lot of cousins around his age from his mom’s and dad’s side, so they came out for his event at Spades along with his sister’s and our friends from UBR. I tried Hennessy for the first time and I fell in love. I drank four cups of Hennessy and coke.
